EFATE island
About
Efate…The island is Vanuatu’s third largest island, where the
main airport is located. It is the country’s most popular tourist
destination and is the home to the national capital, Port Vila. The
first European settlement was on Havannah Harbor, on the north side of
Efate. After a long drought in 1882, the settlement shifted to Port
Vila. Over 40,000 people live on Efate, more than half of them in or
around Port Vila. The rest of them live in small villages along the
coast and only a few live inland.
There are many tours of interest for the visitor on the island. A number
of car hire organizations are based in Vila and several tour operators
offer round island day trips. Havannah harbour is a spectacular natural
haven and was used during World War II as a naval base by the American
Fleet of the Pacific. Cruises to the pretty beaches and good snorkeling
and diving spots of Havannah harbour and to Lelepa Island can be
organized with Sailaway Cruises. The game fishing is excellent and Ymer
Game Fishing has a modern fleet of fast well-equipped boats together
with the all-important experienced crew.
