ESPIRITU santo

About Santo… Air Vanuatu flies to Santo from Port Vila seven days a week.

Santo is the largest island, 4010km2 in size and is fascinating in its diversity. Here Vanuatu’s highest mountain, Mt Tabwemasana (over 1700m), rises out of the dense vegetation covering the entire chain, which runs along the full length of the western side of the island. The southern and eastern regions are quite flat, ideal for the plantations with their fine pastures and huge shady trees for cattle grazing. Santo is on average 2° C warmer than Port Vila. Scuba divers are drawn by the famous wrecks and spectacular marine life. Santo is renowned for its particular political history with cargo cults, resistance movements, and rebellions at the time of Independence. Due to its size and its mountains, Santo has the greatest expanses of original rainforest and is home to colourful butterflies, tropical birds and beautiful orchids. Huge Kauri trees remain in the mountain forests of the southwest.

Santo was the first of the Vanuatu islands to be discovered by the Europeans in the 17th century and later became popular amongst foreign settlers. It was also famous as a military base during World War II, when up to 100,000 soldiers were based in Luganville. Hard to believe when you see the town today

Where to stay in Luganville?: We recommend you enjoy your stay in Luganville at either Deco Stop Lodge, or at The Beachfront Resort.
